After UK net migration today reached a record high, Yvette Cooper MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Secretary, has responded to the Government's immigration statistics, saying:Yvette_Cooper.jpg

“These figures show David Cameron needs to stop the dishonesty over his failed immigration target and replace it with a sensible plan instead which properly separates immigration and asylum.

"All his overblown rhetoric has achieved is a decline in public confidence as the electorate are faced with more broken promises.

"At the same time he has failed to tackle the exploitation by dodgy employers and agencies which is driving low skilled migration, undercutting wages and jobs and at its worst creating modern slavery. Meanwhile universities and businesses are finding the system too rigid to get the top international talent they need.

"But most troubling of all, the net migration target treats immigration and asylum as the same. That is morally wrong and is preventing Britain playing its part in responding to the terrible refugee crisis that stems from Syria and has spread across Europe.

"We have a long tradition of providing sanctuary for those fleeing conflict and persecution abroad - yet we are completely failing to live up to that tradition now. Other countries round the world are doing their bit. It is time Britain did too.”

Gordon is backing Yvette Cooper in the Labour Party leadership contest.

With the summer holidays drawing to a close, Gordon has visited one of the very successful annual summer camps run by Blackpool FC Community Trust.BFC_2.jpg

Gordon was invited to the camp at Marton Academy in South Shore, where there were over a 100 children from the local area taking part - all having lots of fun in the different range of sporting and recreational activities on offer, including hockey, football and dodge ball.

Speaking from the summer camp, he commented: “It was great to see all the children having lots of fun and also the enthusiasm and commitment, Ashley (Hackett) and his team put in year after year. The wide range of activities and coaching mean all the children taking part have a great time at these camps and they also take away a lot from it.

“From speaking to Ashley, the Community Trust is going from strength to strength and it is clear to see why once again this year’s summer camps have been a big success and each day attracting more than a 100 local children.”

Gordon also praised the wider role of the group in the local community and the impact it has on the town.

He said: “These activities and similar ones underline how the Community Trust works with everyone across Blackpool and how it has over the years played a vitally important role in supporting young people with leisure activities, to develop new skills, teach them about the importance of good health and wellbeing, and also make new friendships.”

“The trust needs to continue being supported by everyone in the town so it can carry on with the very positive work it is doing in the local community in the years ahead.”

Ashley Hackett, head of the Blackpool Community Trust said: “Blackpool FC Community Trust’s Holiday Sports Camps are an excellent provision for the people of Blackpool. The camps offer affordable childcare for 5-14 year olds at just £10 per day; from 8 o’clock in the morning until 5pm each evening; throughout the school holidays.

“Not only is it great from a parents point of view, it is providing young people with an opportunity to get active, to make new friends, and most of all have loads of fun.

“It was great for Gordon to be there as a local MP to see the Sports Camps in action and hear about all of the other great work that Blackpool FC Community Trust are doing to make opportunities like this available to everyone in the town.“
